A block of mass 3.5 kg displaces 1000 cm³ of water when fully immersed inside it. Calculate the apparent weight of body in water.
[Density of water = 1000 kgm⁻³, g = 10 ms⁻²]
Explanation
Weight of the block in air = mg = 3.5 × 10 = 35 N.
Volume displaced = 1000 cm³ = 1.0 × 10⁻³ m³. Upthrust = weight of water displaced = 1000 × 1.0 × 10⁻³ × 10 = 10 N.
Apparent weight in water = 35 − 10 = 25 N.
