A point charge q = +1.0 μC is moving with a velocity v = 5.0 × 10⁵ ms⁻¹ in a region of uniform magnetic field B = 0.020 T. The direction of the velocity is at an angle of 30° with the direction of the magnetic field. What is the magnitude of the magnetic force on the charge?
Explanation
The magnetic force on a moving charge is F = qvB sin θ.
F = (1.0 × 10⁻⁶) × (5.0 × 10⁵) × 0.020 × sin 30°.
sin 30° = 0.5, so F = 0.01 × 0.5 = 5.0 × 10⁻³ N.
