200 tickets were sold for a show. VIP tickets costs ₦1,200 and ₦700 for regular. Total amount realised from the sale of the tickets was ₦180,000. Find the number of VIP tickets sold and the the number of regular ticket sold.
Let the number of VIP tickets be v and the number of regular tickets be r. Two facts are given. First, the total number of tickets: v + r = 200. Second, the total money made: 1200v + 700r = ₦180,000.
From the first equation, r = 200 − v. Put that into the money equation: 1200v + 700(200 − v) = 180,000. That gives 1200v + 140,000 − 700v = 180,000, so 500v = 180,000 − 140,000 = 40,000. Divide both sides by 500: v = 80.
Then r = 200 − 80 = 120. Check it: 80 × ₦1,200 = ₦96,000 and 120 × ₦700 = ₦84,000, and ₦96,000 + ₦84,000 = ₦180,000. ✔ So 80 VIP tickets and 120 regular tickets were sold.
