An Hadith is referred to as da’if because

  1. it is sometimes supported with evidences
  2. all its transmitters are reliable
  3. it has defects in its isnad and matn ✓
  4. it is a fabricated tradition
Explanation

Da’if means weak. A hadith is graded weak when there is a fault in its chain of narrators (isnad) or in its text (matn), for example a narrator with a poor memory or a broken chain.

A fabricated hadith is a different grade, called mawdu’.
