Nigeria’s 1979 Constitution, and the 1999 Constitution that followed, copied the American presidential system. It has an elected President who is both head of state and head of government.

It also separates powers among three arms and has a two-chamber National Assembly like the US Congress. The earlier independence constitutions followed the British parliamentary model.
