Which of the following conditions is not necessary for photosynthesis to occur in plants?

  1. There must be light
  2. There must be xylem tissue used to conduct water ✓
  3. There must be chlorophyll to trap radiant energy
  4. Carbondioxide must be present
Explanation

Photosynthesis needs light, chlorophyll to trap light energy, carbon dioxide and water. All of these are essential.

Xylem is only the tissue that carries water in larger plants. It is not a condition for photosynthesis. Simple plants like algae have no xylem, yet they photosynthesise.
