The importance of turgidity of the cells in herbaceous plants is that it

  1. provides mechanical support for the plant ✓
  2. enables absorption of more water
  3. enables the intake of mineral salts from the soil
  4. prevents haemolysis of the cells
Explanation

Herbaceous plants have soft stems with little wood. When their cells are full of water, they are turgid and press against their walls. This keeps the plant firm and upright.

So turgidity provides mechanical support for the plant. When cells lose water, the plant wilts.
