Nigeria gained independence from Britain on October 1, 1960. The struggle involved political parties, constitutional conferences, and nationalist leaders demanding self-rule.

Key figures: Nnamdi Azikiwe, Obafemi Awolowo, Ahmadu Bello. Regional political parties reflected ethnic divisions: NCNC (East), AG (West), NPC (North).

The 1960 constitution created a federal structure with three regions. Sir Abubakar Tafawa Balewa became the first Prime Minister, while Azikiwe was appointed Governor-General.
