Which process is responsible for production of energy in stars?

Stars such as the Sun are very hot and dense. Hydrogen nuclei join together to form helium and release huge energy. This process is nuclear fusion.

Fission splits heavy nuclei, as in a nuclear power plant. That is not what powers stars.
