A biker covered half the distance between two towns in 2 hrs 30 min. After that he increased his speed by 2 km/hr. He covered the second half of the distance in 2 hr 20 min. Find the distance between the two towns and the initial speed of the biker.

  1. 28 km, 140 km/hr
  2. 140 km, 28 km/hr ✓
  3. 120 km, 32 km/hr
  4. 32 km, 120 km/hr
Explanation

Let the initial speed be v km/h and half the distance be d. First half: d = 2.5v (2 hr 30 min = 2.5 hr).

Second half: speed v + 2 for 2 hr 20 min = 7/3 hr, so d = (7/3)(v + 2).

Equate: 2.5v = (7/3)v + 14/3. Multiply by 6: 15v = 14v + 28, so v = 28 km/h. Then d = 2.5 × 28 = 70 km.

The whole distance is 2 × 70 = 140 km. So the answer is 140 km, 28 km/hr.
