Explanation
Minority ethnic groups in the Niger Delta wanted their own region. They felt dominated by the Yoruba in the Western Region. Creating the Mid-Western Region gave them political representation.
Western Region tensions existed but weren’t the direct cause. NCNC influence played a role politically. Biafra’s secession came later in 1967, not 1963.
This new region recognized minority rights within Nigeria’s federal structure. It showed the country trying to balance ethnic representation.
