Which constitution laid the foundation for federalism in Nigeria?
Explanation
The Lyttleton Constitution created Nigeria’s federal system in 1954. It divided power between central and regional governments. This was the first time Nigeria officially became a federation.
Earlier constitutions gave some reforms but not federalism. Clifford allowed limited voting in Lagos. Richards created regions but kept power centralized. Macpherson increased Nigerian participation but still wasn’t truly federal.
Federalism became Nigeria’s foundation for independence. The 1954 constitution set the pattern still used today with federal and state governments.
