Indirect rule in British colonies relied heavily on

Indirect rule used traditional chiefs to govern on behalf of the British. Local leaders kept some power.

This was cheaper than direct rule. It also faced less resistance from local people.

Lord Lugard developed this system in Northern Nigeria and spread it elsewhere.
