When the sun is directly over the Tropic of Cancer on June 21st, the Northern Hemisphere tilts toward the sun.

This gives northern places more hours of sunlight and fewer hours of darkness. It is the summer solstice.

The closer you are to the North Pole, the longer the day becomes.
