When a substance is oxidized, it

  1. Gains electrons
  2. Loses protons (H+ ions)
  3. Loses electrons ✓
  4. Gains oxygen atoms
Explanation

Oxidation means losing electrons. When a substance gives away electrons, it gets oxidized. Oxidation and reduction always happen together.

Gaining electrons is reduction. Losing protons is different from oxidation. Gaining oxygen sometimes causes oxidation, but losing electrons defines it.

Remember: OIL RIG – Oxidation Is Loss, Reduction Is Gain (of electrons).
