Generally, food chains are short because of

  1. energy losses at each trophic level ✓
  2. the activity of decomposers
  3. the activity of consumers
  4. nutrient cycling
Explanation

Energy passes along a food chain from one trophic level to the next. At each step, most of it is lost as heat through respiration and movement, or in waste. Only about 10% reaches the next level.

After a few levels, too little energy remains. So food chains are short because of energy losses at each trophic level.
