Mamman Shata was famous for kalangu music. The kalangu is a talking drum from Northern Nigeria used by the Hausa people.

He did not perform tandu, goge, or duma music. Kalangu music was his specialty and what made him famous.

Mamman Shata was one of the greatest kalangu players ever. His music is still celebrated in Northern Nigeria today.
