Explanation

Biscuit firing is the first firing of clay. It removes water and hardens the piece. The clay turns from soft to hard and porous.

After biscuit firing, glaze is applied. A second firing melts the glaze. Biscuit is the technical term for this first firing.

The fired clay is now called bisque ware. It is strong but still absorbs water. This allows glaze to stick properly.
