Negative space is the empty area around main objects in artwork. It helps balance the positive elements (main subjects) by providing breathing room and visual rest.

Good negative space prevents artwork from feeling crowded or chaotic. It creates harmony between empty areas and filled areas, making compositions more pleasing to view.

Artists use negative space intentionally to balance their compositions. Without proper negative space, artwork can feel heavy or overwhelming on one side.
