Explanation

Carving is a subtractive process where material is removed from a solid block. Artists cut away wood, stone, or other materials to reveal the sculpture inside.

Subtractive means taking away rather than adding. Carvers chip off unwanted material until only the desired shape remains.

This differs from additive processes like modeling clay where material is added. In carving, you always remove material, making it purely subtractive.
