Explanation

Carving is a subtractive process where artists remove material from a solid block. They cut away wood, stone, or other materials to create the final sculpture.

Subtractive means taking away material rather than adding it. Carvers chip, cut, and scrape away unwanted parts until the desired form appears.

This is opposite to additive processes like modeling where material is added. In carving, you always subtract material, never add it.
