Explanation

Cloze tests fill in blanks in a passage. Strategy: read the whole passage first for context. Then consider what part of speech fits each blank (noun, verb, adjective, etc.).

Look at surrounding words for clues: articles (a, an, the) precede nouns; subjects precede verbs; adverbs modify verbs. Collocations and fixed phrases also help.

Check your answers by reading the completed sentence aloud – does it sound natural and make sense? Consider grammar, meaning, and style consistency.
