When Rehoboam became king, he asked for advice about how to rule. His young friends told him to be even harsher than his father Solomon had been.

The older advisors had suggested being kind to the people, but Rehoboam rejected their wisdom. Following his friends’ bad advice split the kingdom in two.

This teaches that listening to foolish counsel, especially from proud friends, can destroy what took years to build.
