Explanation

John the Baptist preached and baptized people in the wilderness of Judea, near the Jordan River. This wild, empty area was far from the comfortable religious establishment in Jerusalem.

John chose this location to call people back to simple, sincere faith in God. The wilderness also reminded people of Israel’s journey with God after leaving Egypt.

His message was to prepare hearts for Jesus, who would soon begin His ministry.
