Explanation

When God made a covenant with Abraham, He instructed Abraham to bring five specific animals. Abraham cut the larger animals in half and arranged them in two rows.

This was an ancient way of making serious agreements. The animals were a heifer, goat, ram, dove, and pigeon, as described in Genesis 15.

God passed between the pieces as fire and smoke, showing He alone would keep the covenant promise.
