Oriki use rich metaphor, historical references, and rhythmic language. A persons oriki might reference ancestral deeds, physical attributes, character traits, and hometown. Hearing ones oriki is deeply moving.

Women traditionally memorize and perform oriki. At ceremonies, skilled chanters recite family oriki to honor guests. This oral tradition preserves history and strengthens identity across generations.
