Lodging means crops fall over due to wind or heavy rain. The plants are still in the field with their nitrogen inside them.

Crop removal takes nitrogen away in the harvested parts. Burning releases nitrogen as gas into the air. Leaching washes nitrogen deep into the ground.

Lodged crops may be damaged, but their nitrogen stays in the field.
