Nitrobacter bacteria convert nitrite into nitrate. This is the second step of nitrification in soil.

Nitrosomonas handles the first step, changing ammonia into nitrite. Azotobacter and Rhizobium are nitrogen-fixing bacteria that capture nitrogen from the air.

Plants absorb nitrogen mainly as nitrate, so Nitrobacter plays a key role in making nitrogen available.
