Explanation

Bacteria are the most important decomposers in soil. They break down dead plant and animal material into nutrients plants can use.

Fungi also decompose organic matter, but bacteria are more numerous and work faster. Algae make their own food and do not decompose things. Nematodes are tiny worms that eat bacteria.

Without bacteria, dead leaves and animals would pile up instead of becoming rich soil.
