Monogastric animals have a single-chambered stomach. Examples: pigs, poultry (chickens, turkeys), rabbits, and horses. They cannot digest cellulose efficiently like ruminants can.

Ruminants (cattle, sheep, goats) have four stomach compartments and can digest grass and roughage. Monogastric animals need more concentrated feeds like grains.

This affects feeding programs: pigs and poultry need energy-dense feeds; cattle can utilize grass and agricultural by-products that monogastric animals cannot.
